Irish ace Cathal Hughes, one half of 2013′s winning pair, nets a fish on his way to glory.

BIG money match fishing fans take note – Ireland’s Lakeland & Inland Waterways World Pairs Angling Championship is returning.

Organisers have confirmed to Angler’s Mail that the event will take place from the 8th to 12thSeptember 2014 in Ireland’s superb wild coarse fishing venues in the Lakelands region.

Many top class international anglers will be seeking the prestigious ‘World Pairs Champions’ title.

Éanna Rowe Co-Chair of Lakeland & Inland Waterways confirmed:“The Lakeland & Inland Waterways World Pairs has clearly highlighted to many international anglers that wild coarse fishing is hugely exciting, challenging and widely available in Ireland’s Lakelands.

“Waterways Ireland and Fáilte Ireland are delighted to co-sponsor the event again under our tourism banner Lakeland & Inland Waterways with support from Fermanagh District Council, Leitrim County Council, Cavan County Council and Daiwa. We are delighted to share our wonderful angling resources with the international angling community at the World Pairs.”

Dean Barlow Catch Shot - low res

Dean Barlow was one of many matchmen from the mainland who enjoyed the pairs last year.

The Daiwa Cup remains an important factor of this event allowing competitors to compete on an individual basis with the opportunity to win daily section and county cash prizes with the top ten receiving vouchers to be spent with Daiwa UK.

Robin Morley of Daiwa said: “In only two years The World Pairs has emerged as one of the most prestigious events on the calendar and we are sure its appeal on a fishing and social level brings something that has been missing for a lot of UK and European anglers. Ireland is a great ‘wild’ place to come and fish. We at Daiwa are certainly ‘up for the cup’ for as long as The Pairs continues.”

New for 2014 are products to be donated by Bait-Tech Advanced Bait Solutions. Bait-Tech invest heavily in top class anglers in the UK and now Ireland to ensure they get the best feedback in order to develop their products.

Andy Neal of Bait-Tech said: “Bait –Tech are proud to be involved with the World Pairs Event. The match organisers have made a huge success of this competition and definitely put Ireland back on the angling map. More and more anglers are back in Ireland enjoying the fabulous sport that’s on offer. Couple that with the stunning surroundings and wonderful hospitality, you’re guaranteed a great time.

“The event has gone from strength to strength and looks to have a massive future. With fishing of the quality that’s on offer and some of the best anglers in the world competing, we relish the chance to be involved. This is natural fishing at its very best. It needs to be celebrated!”

Interest is huge for this year and numbers will be limited so be sure to get your entry in soon. The match organisers will be taking bookings from Saturday 8th March with more information coming in the following weeks at Facebook (worldpairsangling) and Twitter(@worldpairs) or visit http://www.worldpairsangling.com/.

A must-read issue of Angler’s Mail – get your copy when it goes on sale this Tuesday, March 18.

IN one of the best weeks ever for specimen fish, the UK perch record was smashed by a massive river fish with just hours of the season left.

The record-busting specimen is the highlight of a week that saw two carp over 60lb reported, plus a huge lure-caught zander, a giant Fenland rudd and numerous big chub, barbel, roach and pike. It’s undoubtedly one of the most amazing run of big fish catches ever.

For the full story on the historic perch with photos, and other amazing catches, get this week’s Angler’s Mail magazine, on-sale from Tuesday, March 18.

Andy Bennett has lifted the 2013-2014 Angler’s Mail Matchman of the Year title and also banked £5,000 from Preston Innovations.

MANCHESTER match magician Andy Bennett became the 2013-14 Preston Innovations Angler’s Mail Matchman of the Year after a dynamic final weekend of the season.

The Daiwa Guru Bait-Tech backed ace underlined his total dominance of the series by taking his already hefty season’s tally to 98, courtesy of successive second place finishes in 55 and 89-entry matches at his local Partridge Lakes.

Andy has now received his trophy – a new one now the contest has moved to sponsorship by Preston Innovations,  and a record £5,000 winner’s cheque.

Andy was twice winner of our Matchman of the Year under the previous format and Kamasan sponsorship, when only matches over 50 pegs counted, he becomes the first champ in the popular new system, which embraces far more contests around the country.

England Under18s won gold last year.

Steve Sanders, Sensas Team England Manager: said “The reigning World Champions are going to have their work cut out to better last years performance in France, when the England Under 18 squad produced a two day score of 10 points to win the World Championship but, with three anglers still eligible at this age group and the addition of two really good bloodworm anglers, they will be looking to retain their World title.”

Dick Clegg, OBE, International Events Manager for the Angling Trust stated “After last years fantastic performance in France the 2014 squad will be going into this years event full of confidence and I know that manager Steve Sanders and coach Joe Roberts will make sure that this team are totally up to speed.  At this stage in their lives young anglers need to have a management team that they respect and we have no one better in England to ensure success than Steve and Joe.”

Jacob McNeil is the first youngster to progress from the England Talent Pathway programme to a World squad and it is hoped that Jake’s achievement will inspire more youngsters to get involved and follow in his footsteps.  For more information about the England Talent Pathway and to find out how to get involved visit www.anglingtrust.net/talentpathway
